Spandex is derived from the word (expands) which means expanding. These yarns were invented by the American company Dupont in1959 and created a revolution in clothing production. This yarn is used in the production of tight clothes such as swimsuits, jeans, sports clothes, etc. Spandex refers to a yarn that can be stretched up to 5 times its original length without damage. After that, the company launched another stretch called Lycra, which was stronger than Spandex and showed better resistance at high temperatures.

Spandex and Lycra yarn are a kind of synthetic fibers that are based on urethane and they are called polyurethane. These two yarns are not significantly different in terms of technical specification. In fact, all Lycra is Spandex but not every Spandex is Lycra. The word Spandex is the word that is the most used in North America and Canada, while in Europe the word Elastane is used and it is the closest word to describe its chemical structure and in countries such as England, Ireland, Portugal, Spain, Latin America, Australia and New Zealand use the word Lycra. Generally, in Iran, the polyester yarn through which elastic has passed is called spandex (Lycra Filament).

The uses of Spandex yarn (Lycra Filament) in the industry include the following:

  • Production of socks and
  • Shirts, Sweatshirts and sport wear
  • Underwear, Swimsuits and swimwear
  • Medical supplies such as bandages, wrist bands and knee braces

Spandex yarns (Lycra Filament) can be produced in different grades. Common grades that are mostly used in the industry are in the range of 50 to 300 Denier. There are 20-30-40-70-140-210 grades in the market.
