Spandex is derived from the word (expands) which means expanding. These yarns were invented by the American company Dupont in1959 and created a revolution in clothing production. After that, the company launched another stretch called Lycra, which was stronger than Spandex and showed better resistance at high temperatures.

Spandex and Lycra yarn are a kind of synthetic fibers that are based on urethane and they are called polyurethane. These two yarns are not significantly different in terms of technical specification. In fact, all Lycra is Spandex but not every Spandex is Lycra.
