What is monofilament yarn and its application?

Monofilaments refers to single continues filaments. This yarns usually have circular cross section with 100-2000 µm in diameter. Monofilaments usually do not have wide application in apparel because of their low bulk and high bending rigidity. Nylon fishing line is one of the well-recognized application of monofilaments but there is a lot of other usages that are listed below:

  • Dental floss
  • Sports rackets
  • Electrical cable
  • 3D printer
  • Eyewear retainers
  • Weaving and knitting fabrics
  • Internal layer of double wall tanks
  • Medical devises
  • Waste water filters
  • Automobile filters
  • Fishing nets

Hollow monofilaments also have found application in pressure garments.

These yarns are analyzed for tensile strength, water shrinkage, hot air shrinkage, denier, smoothness, diameter uniformity and color. The annealing condition and the residual stress are tow affective parameters on water and air shrinkage of them. Higher stress can lead to high shrinkage that is not acceptable for many applications.

Monofilaments are classified and sold based on their denier (the weight in grams of 9000 m of filament) and tensile strength. On the other hand, smoothness and diameter uniformity is essential in application.
